This letter is in response to the piece written by Athens-Clarke County Commissioner States McCarter (Forum, Dec. 29) titled "Is zoning backlash possible?
In reference to the proposed rezoning for a medical office building at 1140 Prince Ave., now on hold, McCarter writes, "Some people consider the opponents of that rezoning to be somewhat unreasonable in their demands."
That's right, Mr. McCarter. And some people consider commissioners who ignore the people who will be most affected by such a development somewhat unreasonable in their position. People who live in proximity to this proposed development organized and exercised their rights as citizens.
Characterizing opposition to this development as "extremism" may just as likely indicate that McCarter is not "in step with his or her constituents and is doing what is best for the community at large."
As for the 2006 election, let me assure McCarter that this community will continue to work vigorously for the candidate who effectively represents us.
